Ilves take on the visitors KuPS in round 9 match of Finnish Veillausliiga. The match will be played on Wednesday April 21th at Tammelan Stadion (Tampere).
Ilves are trying to prove themselves again, but it’s not all working out. The Lynxes have only been Finnish champions once, back in 1983. However, they did manage to lift the Finnish Cup again in 2023, ending a four-year drought. Last season, they had one of their best campaigns in the Veikkausliiga, finishing as runners-up after placing third in the regular season and overtaking HJK in the championship round. The new season started promisingly, with victories over HJK and two other teams, but then came back-to-back losses that disrupted their rhythm. They returned to winning ways with a 3-2 result over Haka in May, but followed it up with a clear 1-3 defeat away to Inter Turku last weekend, once again revealing their inconsistency.

KuPS have a long-standing tradition of success in Finnish football. Their 2024 season was especially outstanding, as they secured the domestic double — league title and Finnish Cup. In the Veikkausliiga, they battled closely with rivals, but ultimately pulled away in the final round to finish first for the first time since 2019. Their cup triumph also marked their second in three years and sixth overall. This season, they’ve continued with an almost flawless start, drawing only once against Inter Turku and winning all other matches to solidify their position at the top of the table. Their latest 3-1 away victory over Haka showed they are still in top form and ruthless on the road.
Despite KuPS’s current strength, they have lost two consecutive matches to Ilves — once in September during last season’s championship round and again in the Finnish Cup earlier this year. It’s surprising that the visitors are not being seen as clear favorites. That opens up a good opportunity — back KuPS to avoid defeat on the road.
