Hungary take on the visitors Turkey in a Friendly International match. The match will be played on Friday, March 22nd at Puskás Aréna (Budapest).
Hungary were once considered the strongest in the world. But after the Golden Team dispersed for various reasons, a new generation of such caliber was not found in the country. And in the 80s, the national team didn't qualify anywhere. It's only in the last decade that everything has noticeably changed. Despite consistently missing out on the World Cup (they didn't qualify for the last one, losing in the playoffs), the team participated in Euro 2016 – immediately making it to the playoffs. This wasn't repeated at the next championship, but many remembered how the underdog fought in the group of death and how much nerves it spoiled for the favorites. In recent years, the Hungarians, first by rising to Division A in the Nations League, not only didn't get lost there but almost won their group. And in the qualifiers, they finished first in their group, securing a place in the Euro prematurely.

Turkey managed to qualify despite an unexpected change of coach in the autumn. The Janissaries were among the participants in the previous championship. But they finished last of all, with the 24th result, losing all matches. Soon after that failure, Kuntz took over as coach, and the German did quite well. But he didn't lead them to the World Cup, losing in the playoffs, which raised questions about last year's results. After barely avoiding defeat at home against Armenia and then losing a friendly match to Japan, Stefan was replaced by Montella, thankfully he had already worked in the country at the club level. Vincenzo debuted perfectly: winning 1-0 against the group favorite, Croatia. It soon became apparent that the national team had prematurely secured qualification for the tournament. But they still ended 2023 on a high note, defeating the Germans, albeit in a friendly match, and then drawing 1-1 away against Wales.
Initially, the Turks won three times with only one draw. But then everything turned 180 degrees, and then the Magyars took 10 out of 12 points. Both teams are rightly considered home teams – their courage depends on how the stands are set. So, the pupils of Marco Rossi are obliged to defeat such an opponent, even in a friendly match, in the traditionally lively Budapest.
Prediction for the match: Hungary to win.
