Hungary take on the visitors Slovenia in a Friendly International match. The match will be played on Saturday, March 28th at Puskás Aréna (Budapest).
Hungary have recently started to return to the European Championships on a regular basis. They also played at UEFA Euro 2024, although once again they failed to reach the playoffs. Then, a year ago in the Nations League play-out for a place in Division A, they lost twice to Turkey national football team — 1-3 away and 0-3 at home. Later, in the qualification group, they managed to beat only Armenia national football team twice. At the same time, Hungary produced an entertaining 2-2 draw away against the favorites, Portugal national football team. Most importantly, after starting with a draw away to Republic of Ireland national football team, they dramatically lost the decisive final match at home: leading 1-0 and 2-1, they conceded in the 80th and 90+6th minutes, ultimately losing in Budapest and slipping to third place instead of securing second. As a result, they are now simply preparing for the next cycle, focusing on friendly matches. Their recent results confirm a clear decline in form, with too many dropped points even against beatable opponents.

Slovenia disappointed last year. The “Boys” finally managed to qualify for a major tournament, reaching UEFA Euro 2024. There, they even advanced to the playoffs. A year ago, they also added a Nations League play-out victory — 0-0 away and 1-0 at home against Slovakia national football team. However, what followed was mostly disappointment. In June, they won friendly matches against Luxembourg national football team and Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team. But in the autumn qualification campaign, they failed to win a single game. In six matches against Sweden national football team, Kosovo national football team and Switzerland national football team, they recorded two defeats and four draws, ultimately finishing in a disappointing last place for a team with ambitions. Now they need to prove they have learned from those lessons and can finally deliver a more solid performance and secure a win. At the moment, their form also raises concerns, as they have struggled to convert performances into victories.
The national teams have already faced each other in friendly matches in 2003 and 2008. On both occasions, the “Boys” came out on top. The hosts are considered favorites. At home, they should be able to defeat a relatively convenient opponent — the pick is Hungary to win.
Prediction for the match: Hungary to win.
