Hammerby take on the visitors Mjallby in the round 18 match of Swedish Allsvenskan.The match will be played on Thursday April 22nd at 3Arena (Stockholm).
Hammarby aren’t among the most decorated clubs in Sweden. Their main trophies — the Allsvenskan title in 2001 and a Svenska Cupen win in 2021 — came as isolated achievements. That’s why last season was considered a strong campaign: for the first time in two decades, they finished as league runners-up. However, they only collected 54 points and edged out AIK on goal difference, while still finishing 11 points behind champions Malmö. Under Kim Hellberg, they kicked off the current season with three wins and a combined goal tally of 8-0. But then came a loss to Mjällby, followed by a pattern of alternating wins and draws. After edging Sirius 3-2, they shared the spoils with AIK — although that was against the current league leaders.

Mjällby look like a serious contender this season. The yellow-and-blacks have been around for nearly 90 years, having been founded in the late 1930s. Their honours list is modest, with several Superettan titles — the most recent in 2019. A major breakthrough nearly came in 2023 when they reached the Svenska Cupen final for the first time but fell short of the trophy. Last season, Torstensson’s side secured fifth place in the Allsvenskan with 50 points. They began this campaign with a couple of draws but followed up with a string of wins — including a notable victory over Hammarby. Their only loss came away at dominant league leaders AIK, 1-2. Since then, they’ve beaten both Djurgården and Brommapojkarna, allowing them to climb to the top of the current table.
Each of the last three meetings between these sides ended with the home team claiming all three points. Despite Hammarby being viewed as favourites, this seems like an underestimation of the visitors. Mjällby are in excellent form and should be capable of avoiding defeat here — back the away side on a double chance (draw or win).
