GKS Katowice take on the visitors Zaglebie in the round 2 match of Polish Ekstraklasa. The match will be played on Monday, July 28th at Stadion miejski w Katowicach (Katowice).
Katowice don't want to lose momentum. GKS were once a dominant force in Polish football, winning league titles and cup trophies — but nearly all of those achievements came in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Since then, the club has faded into obscurity, even dropping to the fourth tier after relegation from the Ekstraklasa in 2005. As recently as 2019–2021, they were playing in the third division. The real turnaround only came last season. They finally returned to the top flight and held their own, finishing a respectable 8th with 49 points. Their 2024–25 campaign started at home against Raków, where they failed to respond after conceding and ended up losing 0-1. It was a subdued attacking display, and the team will need to improve quickly to stay competitive in a tough league.

Zagłębie’s rare successes mostly came at the turn of the century, with a Polish Cup final appearance in 2014 being one of the few bright spots since. In recent years, however, the club has been closer to the relegation zone than European qualification. Last season was another struggle, but things changed after the arrival of coach Waldemar Fornalik in March. Under his guidance, they stabilized just in time, securing 15th place and avoiding the drop by a five-point margin. They opened this new campaign with a narrow 0-1 loss away to Widzew Łódź, conceding just before halftime. The lack of attacking threat was a concern, and another defeat now could dent the squad’s already fragile confidence.
Historically, the Lubin-based side have often dominated this fixture. However, last season the teams traded home wins by identical 1-0 scorelines. Both sides were ineffective in front of goal in their opening matches, and there’s little to suggest a high-scoring turnaround is imminent. We expect another low-scoring affair — likely staying under the 3.0 total goals mark.
Prediction for the match: Under 3.0 scored goals.
