Georgia take on Czech Republic in the round 2 match of UEFA Euro-2024 group stage. The match will be played on Saturday, June 22nd at Volksparkstadion (Hamburg).
Georgia haven't shown significant improvement, although they now boast stars from Western European clubs like Mamardashvili and Mikautadze, and, of course, the standout among them, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Despite this, last year the team only managed to win against Cyprus, albeit twice. However, the main success came in March during the additional playoff in the Nations League path, where they defeated Luxembourg 2-0 in Tbilisi and won against Greece in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw. In the summer, after a warm-up victory in Podgorica against Montenegro (3-1), the Georgians finally made their debut at this level with a match against Turkey. Against their neighbors, they showed good football, especially for newcomers. But in the end, luck wasn't on their side: they had a chance to equalize at 2-2 but ended up losing 1-3 after conceding into an empty net.

Czech Republic aims to perform no worse than in the previous tournament. The "Locomotive" has only played in the World Cup once, without much success. However, they have consistently performed well in the Euro format. Notably, at the dawn of their independent existence in 1996, they even reached the final, only to be defeated by Bierhoff's golden goal in the decisive match. While they haven't replicated that success, in the previous tournament, Schick and company were only eliminated in the quarterfinals. Their qualification campaign in 2023 was mixed but ultimately successful: they lost to Albania, but together with them, they comfortably finished 4 points ahead of Poland, securing their ticket to Germany. In 2024, Ivan Hašek's team achieved a series of victories in friendly matches, including a 7-1 thrashing of Malta. At the championship, they immediately faced the favorite, Portugal. As underdogs, they had chances for success, but some severe mistakes in their own penalty area towards the end resulted in a 1-2 defeat.
The Georgians have not faced the Czechs before. Ultimately, the nominal visitors have more and far stronger arguments in their favor. We bet on a win for the Czechs.
Prediction for the match: Czech Republic to win.
