Genoa take on the visitors Lazio in the round 5 match of Italian Serie A. The match will be played on Monday, September 29th at Stadio Luigi Ferraris (Genoa).
Genoa had recently fallen into Serie B but managed to return under Gilardino’s guidance. He kept his men in Serie A, but several key players left in the summer, and Malinovskyi suffered a complicated leg fracture. These challenges were too much for the inexperienced Alberto, but after he was replaced by Vieira, Genoa eventually finished 13th with 43 points. This summer there weren’t such major departures, yet the new campaign still began on a difficult note. After starting with a 3-0 win over Vicenza in the cup, they drew at home with Lecce and Como and fell 0-1 to Juventus. Against Bologna, they opened the scoring but collapsed 1-2. In midweek they took revenge in the Coppa Italia with a win over Empoli. Despite flashes of character, Genoa continue to struggle with defensive consistency. Their inability to see out matches against stronger opposition has already cost them valuable points.

Lazio are hoping to bring back former glory. The “Aquilotti,” under Sarri’s guidance, managed to secure a second-place finish — matching their best result in a quarter of a century. Things later deteriorated, and Maurizio was dismissed. The situation didn’t improve, and in 2024/25 Lazio ended up with only 65 points, the same as Fiorentina, but the Viola took 6th place on tiebreakers. After Bologna’s cup win, the Roman side even missed out on a place in the Conference League. To fix things, they called back the “Smoker” in the summer. However, the start of the new campaign has been far from impressive. They thrashed Verona 4-0 at home, but before that lost 0-2 to Como, and after that, failed to respond away to newly promoted Sassuolo, who scored once and held on. The derby with Roma ended in another setback: Lazio replied to their rival’s goal with nothing more than two late red cards. The lack of stability in attack remains a major concern, with Immobile struggling to find form. Their away record has also been worrying, as they’ve failed to score in both road games this season.
All of the last four head-to-head matches have gone in favor of the Eagles. Moreover, during that stretch they did not concede a single goal. Both teams are clearly unconvincing. The bet here is on an uneventful game with “under 2.5 goals.”
Prediction for the match: Under 2.5 scored goals.
