GAIS take on the visitors AIK in the round 15 match of Swedish Allsvenskan. The match will be played on Monday, July 22nd at Gamla Ullevi (Göteborg).
GAIS have won the national championship four times and have taken the cup, but all these successes are from the last century. Recently, this historic club found itself languishing at a semi-professional level. However, they managed to secure a couple of promotions, including finishing second in the Superettan in 2023. Riding this wave of success, the newcomer started strong in the spring with a victory in the second round, even on the road. By late spring, they had 7 wins in 11 matches, despite four losses. However, it seems the momentum is fading, or perhaps opponents are taking them more seriously. In June, before the break, they suffered a 0-4 defeat at Halmstad. After the championship resumed, they played to a goalless draw with Hammarby and then lost 1-3 away to Sirius.

AIK is showing their usual modest results. Gnaget have been national champions 12 times, including a title in 2018. Who would have thought that the next success would take so long? Not only did the capital club fall behind Malmö and others, but they also ended up in the lower part of the table. Last season, they didn't even make the top 10, finishing in 11th place. This season, they initially showed improvement, with 3 wins and a couple of draws at the start. However, despite some spectacular wins (6-2 against Norrköping, 5-2 against Göteborg), they have lost 6 times. Only in their last match did they manage a 2-1 away win against Halmstad, achieved under the interim leadership of Goitom.
Gnaget have won four consecutive encounters. But the last match, a cup game, was in 2017 – there haven't even been friendly matches since then. The effect of the coaching change for the Stockholm club is still in play. They should at least avoid losing the next match on the newcomer’s field.
