FCSB take on the visitors Hermannstadt in the round 1 of Romanian Superliga. The match will be played on Saturday, June 12th at Arena Nationala (Bucharest).
FCSB are once again looking like the best team in the country. Steaua — as the club was known for most of its history — rightfully holds the status of a Romanian football giant. At one point, they even won the European Cup. However, following their domestic double in 2015, they struggled to maintain success, with only a Cup win in 2020 to show for nearly a decade. In the league, they were consistently falling short of the top spot. That changed two seasons ago, when they finally reclaimed the league title and successfully defended it in the spring, gradually extending their lead over main rivals CFR Cluj to nine points. The current squad has remained largely intact, and the addition of Romanian international striker Denis Alibec has only increased expectations. FCSB also showed good form in preseason, winning all but one of their friendly matches.

Hermannstadt are set to celebrate their 10-year anniversary this month since being founded. They quickly rose through the ranks, making their top-flight debut in 2018 and even reaching the national cup final that same year. Unfortunately, they lost on both that occasion and again this spring, falling to CFR Cluj in the final. Their league performances have often been inconsistent, including a relegation and later return to the first division. Last season, they finished only 8th after the regular phase with 41 points. Still, they managed to top the lower playoff group, narrowly edging out a fading Sepsi and beating Oțelul by a single point. That finish didn’t earn them a European spot but did boost morale going into the summer break. Preseason form has been mixed, with defensive issues still evident.
Surprisingly, FCSB have struggled against this opponent. In their last seven encounters, both sides have two wins apiece, and in the 2024/2025 season Hermannstadt even took four out of a possible six points from the reigning champions. It’s time for the capital club to finally overcome this tricky opponent. Back FCSB to start the new campaign with a win on home turf.
Prediction for the match: FCSB to win.
