Espanyol take on the visitors Mallorca in the round 4 match of Spanish LaLiga. The match will be played on Monday, September 15th at RCDE Stadium (Cornella de Llobregat).
Espanyol have shown a solid start to the campaign. The Parakeets have never lacked ambition. But over time they slipped into the role of a “yo-yo” club between divisions. Two seasons ago, they only returned from Segunda División through the promotion playoffs. This time they did fairly well at the higher level, finishing 14th in La Liga in spring. They collected 42 points, which was only two more than 18th-placed Leganés, who went down. In summer their goalkeeper Joan García joined Barcelona, but even without him they started the new season brightly. Against Atlético Madrid they produced a comeback 2-1 win, then earned a high-scoring 2-2 draw away to Real Sociedad in San Sebastián. And in the previous round they edged Osasuna 1-0 at home. Espanyol have looked particularly sharp in front of goal, scoring five times across their first three league matches. Their home form has been especially encouraging, with back-to-back clean sheets at their own ground.

Mallorca were also once a “yo-yo” team, but stabilized in La Liga under Javier Aguirre. Near the end of his tenure, last year, they even reached the Copa del Rey final. In summer 2024, Jagoba Arrasate took over. He immediately showed that he wanted to push the team into European competitions. They didn’t quite make it, finishing 10th with 48 points. Now they are still winless, though that’s understandable given their tough schedule. They’ve already faced Barcelona (0-3 at home after an early red card) and Real Madrid (1-2 away in Madrid). There was also a home game against Celta Vigo, where they trailed from the first half but equalized late through Nacho Moré in the 87th minute to draw 1-1. Mallorca have struggled defensively, conceding six goals in their opening three fixtures. Their attack has shown flashes of quality, but they have yet to score more than once in a match this season.
The Catalans had 10 wins between 2022 and 2024 (including 3 wins and a draw away). But in March, during the second half of last season, Mallorca finally beat them — 2-1. The hosts have made a stronger start to this campaign. We’ll bet on them to claim a home win.
