England take on Slovenia in the round 3 match of UEFA Euro-2024 group stage. The match will be played on Tuesday, June 25th at RheinEnergieStadion (Cologne).
Under Gareth Southgate, England has been a very dull and boring spectacle, especially considering the quality of players in this squad. However, as long as this highly pragmatic style of the coach continues to deliver results, we shouldn't expect anything new from the originators of football in important official matches. In the first round of the group stage, the English narrowly defeated Serbia (1-0). In the second round, they settled for a draw with Denmark (1-1), and they were close to winning, but the opponent scored a brilliant long-range strike. In both cases, the bet on "Under 2.5 goals" came through. I’m inclined to consider this again in the final match of the group stage involving Southgate's boys.

Slovenia finished both of their Euro matches with the same 1-1 draw, which is not a bad result overall. This team objectively lags behind both the Danes and the Serbs in terms of class, but thanks to their discipline, character, and Jan Oblak in goal, they still have a chance to reach the playoffs. However, to do so, they need to beat England and hope that their competitors in the parallel match also draw. It sounds rather unrealistic, doesn't it? Yes, Slovenia needs nothing but a win, as any other result won’t suffice. But, let's be honest, it’s hard to imagine this team attacking the goal of the football originators with full force and leaving themselves exposed. That would be suicidal for them.
Like it or not, the plan for Slovenia is clear – build a solid defense and wait for their chances on counterattacks and set pieces. And what about England? They will likely play their usual possession game because theoretically, a draw is enough for them to advance from the group. This doesn't mean that the originators of football are initially satisfied with a draw, no. The difference in class will take its toll, and England will have chances to score even if they play at half strength. Meanwhile, Southgate’s men are unlikely to give Slovenia many opportunities at their own end. My prediction is "Under 2.5 goals." I'm expecting a routine 1-0 or 2-0 win in this match. Or at worst, 1-1 if the English become completely lethargic in the final round of the group stage.
Prediction for the match: Under 2.5 scored goals.
