Elfsborg take on the visitors Mjallby in the round 15 match of Swedish Allsvenskan. The match will be played on Thursday, May 21st at Borås Arena (Borås).
Elfsborg last won the Swedish title back in 2012. They have not managed to repeat that achievement, but they did finish runners-up in 2023, while in 2024/2025 they reached the Europa League league phase and were far from hopeless there. That is exactly why the club were clearly disappointed with last season’s 8th-place finish. After the long winter break, the start looked fairly promising, with three wins and one draw from the opening stretch. Their home performances have generally remained competitive, even when results have become less convincing. Still, momentum has clearly faded compared to the opening weeks, and the recent inconsistency raises questions. Then came a sharp dip: they even lost to Kalmar, while only managing a home draw against AIK. Brommapojkarna were eventually beaten, but in the latest round against Halmstad they once again settled for just a point.

Mjällby understand the scale of the challenge ahead. MAIF represent what is essentially a village of just 1,500 residents. The club had appeared in the top flight before, but as recently as 2018 they were still playing in the third tier. Then came a rapid rise through Superettan, and last season they jumped from 5th place to 1st, claiming the first league title in club history in highly convincing fashion. Before that, their only major near-success had been the 2023 domestic cup final, which they lost. Defending the crown was always going to be much harder, and the start reflected that pressure, with defeats in the opening two matches. However, their attacking rhythm has looked sharper in recent weeks, suggesting the champions are gradually finding their level again. Even so, the latest setback showed there is still instability beneath the surface. After beating Brommapojkarna, they were held to a goalless draw by GAIS, though the second half of spring seemed to bring improvement, with more goals and more wins, including a victory over Degerfors. Still, in the latest round, even at home against Häcken, they slipped again with a 0-1 defeat.
After Elfsborg won three straight meetings across 2023–2024, the next two clashes ended in draws, and only in October did the reigning champions finally manage to beat this opponent again. This looks like a very evenly matched contest on paper. Still, the lean is toward the reigning champions, but with a draw no bet safety net, given their slightly higher ceiling and ability to grind out results even when not at their best.
Prediction for the match: Mjällby to win.
