Dominican Republic take on the visitors St. Vincent and the Grenadines in round 1 match of CONCACAF Series. The match will be played on Wednesday, November 12th at Estadio Cibao FC (Santiago).
Dominican Republic first appeared on the football map in the mid-1950s, but only this year finally made their debut at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. There, they predictably lost to both Mexico and Costa Rica — but by narrow margins, 2–3 and 1–2. In the final group match, they managed to hold their opponent to a goalless draw. Earlier in World Cup qualifying, they beat weaker sides like Dominica and the British Virgin Islands but couldn’t even earn a draw against Guatemala or, even less so, Jamaica. As a result, by autumn, they were only playing friendlies. Those didn’t go well either: in September, they suffered a heavy 0–3 defeat to Jordan, and last month they couldn’t respond to Uruguay’s lone goal. Still, the team has shown improved organization compared to previous years, especially in transition play and discipline. Their recent performances suggest they are slowly developing into a side that can compete respectably within the Caribbean region.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have had some occasional success at the local Caribbean Cup level, even reaching the final back in 1995. A year later, they made their only appearance at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Since then, they’ve failed to replicate those achievements. In this World Cup qualifying campaign, they only managed to beat Anguilla (albeit 6–0!) while losing to Suriname, El Salvador, and Puerto Rico. As a result, the team has spent the past few months playing only friendlies. In October, they faced Cuba twice — first winning emphatically 7–0, then following it up with a 1–0 victory thanks to Anderson’s 75th-minute strike. Despite that rare burst of success, consistency remains their main issue, as they often struggle to maintain focus across matches. Their defense, in particular, tends to collapse under sustained pressure from better-organized opponents.
Although the two nations are located relatively close in the same region, they’ve only met once — in the 2014 Caribbean Cup, where Vincy Heat won narrowly. Little is likely to change now — the hosts are stronger and should prove it again, winning with a “–1 goal” handicap.
Prediction for the match: Dominican Republic to win with -1.0 handicap.
