Deportivo Riestra continue to perform quite successfully. The Black and Whites were founded back in the early 1930s, but only in 2023 did they finally earn the right to debut in Argentina’s top division. Although many teams struggle in their second year at the top level, Riestra have actually improved quite noticeably. In the Apertura, they collected 24 points from 16 matches but were immediately knocked out of the playoffs by Huracán. Now, as the Clausura phase approaches, they’ve already gathered 27 points, even after winning just one of their last four games. Riestra have built their success on strong defensive organization and determination at home. Their ability to stay consistent against mid-table rivals has made them one of the pleasant surprises of the season so far.

Independiente have a glorious past, filled with silverware. They have won the Copa Libertadores seven times and doubled that tally in national championships. However, since the Apertura 2002, they’ve managed to lift only two Copa Sudamericana titles — in 2010 and 2017 — while finishing seventh in the domestic league last season. That result qualified them for the Copa Sudamericana again, but after reaching the playoffs they lost away to Universidad de Chile, and violent fan riots following a poor home display led to their disqualification. Their domestic form has been better — in the Apertura, they reached the semifinals before falling to Huracán on penalties after a goalless draw. Yet now, even with two consecutive wins, they sit with only 12 points after 14 rounds, just escaping the bottom of their group. Independiente’s main problem this year has been inconsistency, particularly away from home. Still, their recent victories may give them a much-needed boost in confidence heading into this clash.
Last season, in their first meetings, the sides exchanged victories. Their most recent encounter, in April, ended in a goalless draw. The hosts look stronger and more motivated at the moment. Even though the visitors have shown signs of revival, Riestra should be able to come out on top.
