Denmark take on the visitors North Macedonia in semifinal match of FIFA World Cup promotion. The match will be played on Thursday, March 26th at Parken Stadium (Copenhagen).
Denmark side have made people used to their consistently solid results — they are seen as regular participants in major tournaments. But it was at the last World Cup that they suffered their first really noticeable failure, going out in the group stage. And at last year’s Euros, although the national team did reach the round of 16, they still failed to win a single match. It seems they had begun to find their game under the current head coach, Riemer. In the Nations League they reached the playoffs, where a year ago they gave Portugal, the eventual winners, a real fight. And it looked as if they would also win their World Cup qualifying group. But then came the collapse in November: first they failed to beat Belarus, the outsiders, at home. Even after that 2-2 draw, everything was still under control. They simply needed to avoid defeat in Scotland in the final round — but instead they lost 2-4 there. Even so, their recent home form suggests they still remain a difficult side to handle when they manage to dictate the tempo.

North Macedonia will try to show their character once again. The “Lions” have still not become a serious force. But they have already once taken advantage of the “Nations League path,” reaching their debut Euro 2020 through the additional playoffs. Afterwards, though, they almost qualified for the World Cup the “normal” way, but in the playoffs, after sensationally beating Italy, they lost the decisive match to Portugal. The following qualification campaigns ended with mediocre results — for example, last autumn they collected 13 points in 8 matches, finishing behind both Belgium and Wales. Before that, however, there was the Nations League campaign, where in a group with Armenia, the Faroe Islands, and Latvia they managed to collect 5 wins and 16 points — and that was enough to send them into the knockout matches once again. Their recent results show a side that can stay organized and stubborn, especially when the game turns into a battle of discipline and patience.
In the Euro 96 qualifying campaign, the young national team took a 1-1 home draw from the champions, but lost away from home. Then, in a friendly in 2013, the “Reds” produced a crushing 3-0 victory. The clearly stronger team are playing at home. The bet here is Denmark to win with a -1.5 goal handicap.
Prediction for the match: Denmark to win with -1.5 handicap.
