Csikszereda M. Ciuc take on the visitors CFR Cluj in the round 6 match of Romanian Superliga. The match will be played on Thursday, October 16th at Stadionul Municipal (Miercurea Ciuc).
Csikszereda were founded over a century ago, in 1919, but for most of their history, they remained largely unknown. Only about a decade ago did they manage to establish themselves in Romania’s third division, and in 2019, they earned promotion to Liga II. Last season, they finished third, which was enough to secure a historic promotion to Liga I for the very first time. Initially, the newcomers struggled, managing only a draw in their debut match against Dinamo Bucharest and then suffering a string of defeats. However, things started to improve from September onwards. They went on a series of draws — including one against the reigning champions, FCSB — before finally achieving their first-ever top-flight victory in the last round, defeating Universitatea Cluj 2-1 away. The team has begun to find its rhythm, showing better organization and fighting spirit under coach Valentin Suciu. Their recent performances suggest they are slowly adapting to the intensity of Liga I football.

CFR Cluj have mostly disappointed this season. The Railwaymen recently enjoyed a golden era, winning five consecutive Romanian titles between 2018 and 2022. A brief decline followed, though they nearly reclaimed the crown last spring, narrowly losing the title race to FCSB. With the Bucharest giants now inconsistent, CFR seemed well-positioned to challenge again. However, the team from Cluj-Napoca is still far from its best form. Their European campaign started promisingly with wins over Paksi and Lugano in the Europa League qualifiers, but they were later eliminated by Braga and then suffered a humiliating 2-7 loss to Häcken in the Conference League. In the domestic league, a narrow 2-1 victory over Hermannstadt before the international break was only their second win in the last 11 matches. The defense, once a cornerstone of their success, has become surprisingly shaky, while their attack lacks consistency despite the presence of veteran forward Daniel Bîrzu. Coach Adrian Mutu is under growing pressure to turn results around before the title hopes completely fade.
The clubs have always played in different divisions until now, meaning the vice-champions will face the newly promoted side for the first time in history — they have never met in the cup or even in friendlies. Despite Csikszereda’s momentum, CFR have far greater class and, above all, experience at this level. The visitors should be able to handle the pressure and claim an away win against the debutants.
Prediction for the match: CFR Cluj to win.
