Croatia take on Albania in the round 2 match of UEFA Euro-2024 group stage. The match will be played on Wednesday, June 19th at Volksparkstadion (Hamburg).
Croatia intends to go as far as possible. The "Checkered Ones" rather unexpectedly appointed the then little-known Zlatko Dalic as head coach in 2017. This turned out to be the beginning of a successful period. It’s not just the “silver” at the 2018 World Cup and the “bronze” in Qatar that come to mind in this context, but also the fact that last summer, only in a penalty shootout in the Nations League final did the trophy go to Spain. On the other hand, Modric and other veterans are clearly getting what is likely their last chance to shine again—many of them are well into their 30s. Last year, there was already a misstep when in October, the favorite lost consecutively to Wales and Turkey. But they still qualified directly for the Euro, after which they showed good results in friendly matches, even winning 2-1 on Portugal’s field. However, Spain did not even notice their opponent in the championship, managing to win 3-0, with all the goals scored in the first half.

Albania managed to make their debut at a major tournament in 2016. That achievement under Di Biasi set a new standard for the team. Only Silvinho, a well-known former full-back but relatively young and not particularly successful coach, who also worked in clubs, managed to repeat that success. With the national team, the Brazilian maximized the opportunities: a relatively easy group in the Euro qualifiers and a crisis among the favorites, the Poles. But the team also managed to show good results against another qualification leader, the Czechs, and qualified directly for the tournament. After that, there were rather mediocre friendly matches, albeit with victories in June—but over Liechtenstein and Azerbaijan. At the Euro, they managed to score the fastest goal in the tournament's history. But within a quarter of an hour, the "Azzurri" took the lead and eventually held on to their advantage.
Although the teams represent neighboring countries, they have never even played on the same field in a friendly format before. The "Checkered Ones" must achieve significant success to compensate for the misstep at the start. We are betting on their victory with a “-1 goal” handicap.
Prediction for the match: Croatia to win with -1.0 handicap.
