Chile take on the visitors Uruguay in the round 18 match of South America World Cup Qualification. The match will be played on Wednesday, September 10th at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos (Santiago de Chile).
Chile won back-to-back Copa América titles in 2015 and 2016. Just before that, they had also reached the World Cup quarterfinals twice in a row. But since then it has been nothing but failure. This cycle has been historically poor. Last year, they failed to win a single match at Copa América — and naturally did not make it past the group stage. In the World Cup qualifiers, they have only managed a couple of victories, and in 2025 they went through official matches without scoring a single goal, drawing only once at home against Ecuador and losing all the others. In autumn, already with no hope of qualifying, they traveled to Rio de Janeiro and were completely outclassed by Brazil, losing 3-0 without showing any real threat. Chile are now the lowest-scoring team in the competition, with just 5 goals in 10 matches. Defensively, they have also collapsed, conceding 16 goals over the same stretch, highlighting their dramatic decline.

Uruguay have created problems for themselves. The “Charrúas” were forced into a full squad overhaul after the 2022 World Cup, as several veterans ended their international careers almost at once. That included Luis Suárez, who bowed out by helping his country secure 3rd place at Copa América 2024… only to later launch public criticism at current head coach Marcelo Bielsa. Naturally, that affected the squad’s performances. The team began dropping points too often, although earlier victories still kept them in the upper part of the table. Only in the summer did Uruguay finally win again at home — a 2-0 result over Venezuela. They then began this round with a convincing 3-0 win against a struggling Peru, even without needing to put in maximum effort. And that was against an opponent fighting desperately for 7th place and a playoff spot. Uruguay remain inconsistent away from home, but their attack led by Darwin Núñez has started to find rhythm again. Their defensive record is also one of the best in South America, with just 7 goals conceded in qualifying so far.
In their last five meetings, Uruguay have four wins and one draw, with that stalemate coming at Copa América in the summer of 2021. The visitors are stronger — as, frankly, are most of the teams in this South American qualifying campaign — and they should be able to win here.
Prediction for the match: Uruguay to win.
