Chelsea take on the visitors Tottenham in the round 37 match of English Premier League. The match will be played on Tuesday, May 19th at Stamford Bridge (London).
Chelsea failed to impress under the new ownership for quite some time. But in the summer before last, they finally seemed to find the manager who could deliver success. Maresca not only returned his new side to the Premier League top four, but also brought in new trophies for the club — first the Conference League, where Chelsea were rightly seen as overwhelming favorites, and then the Club World Cup in the summer. Yet just six months later, Enzo was dismissed — on the very first day of January. Rosenoir, who replaced him, set an unwanted club record by lasting less than four months, while crashing out of both the League Cup and the Champions League. A long losing streak in the Premier League followed as well. Chelsea’s recent league form has remained inconsistent, with performances often lacking both composure and conviction in key moments. Even when controlling stretches of matches, they have struggled to turn that into reliable results, which keeps the pressure firmly in place. Even after that manager’s departure, things did not improve much — they lost 1-3 at home to Nottingham Forest, then only managed a draw against an inconsistent Liverpool. In the cup, however, they did edge past Leeds by the narrowest of margins. Reaching the final, things ended quite predictably there against Manchester City — a 0-1 defeat.

Tottenham have somehow managed to create even more problems for themselves than a year ago. Spurs shocked everyone that spring by dropping to 17th place, right on the edge. But firstly, there was never a truly realistic threat of relegation. Secondly, they clearly prioritized the Europa League in the spring, and that gamble paid off: they finally lifted a trophy. Even so, Postecoglou was still dismissed. But his successors, both Frank and especially Tudor, disappointed. While Tottenham showed some decent moments in the Champions League, domestically they hovered dangerously close to relegation territory. In fact, they dropped into 18th place already under De Zerbi, who began with just one point from two matches. Still, there has been a visible uptick in energy and competitiveness since then, suggesting the team may finally be stabilizing at the right moment. Their recent displays have at least shown more fight, even if consistency remains an issue. After that, though, he did manage to beat not only Wolverhampton, but also Aston Villa, overtaking West Ham in the process. Against Leeds, however, they could only manage a 1-1 draw.
In the head-to-head meetings, the Blues have won 10 of the last 12 encounters, including five in a row, with just one defeat in that span. Spurs are not getting much respect here, but they have clearly improved under this manager and are in desperate need of points. We’ll back the visitors to avoid defeat at the very least.
Prediction for the match: Tottenham not to lose (X2).
