Chelsea, or rather their management, can be quite paradoxical. They went through several disappointing years, but when they finally found a capable and successful manager in Enzo Maresca, they dismissed him just six months after the successful 2024/2025 season that brought a return to the Premier League top four, victory in the UEFA Europa Conference League, and later in the summer success at the FIFA Club World Cup. On the other hand, in the Champions League they confidently reached the playoffs — where they are now battling Paris Saint-Germain, which of course consumes a lot of energy. Things are going fairly well in the Premier League too, although there are occasional setbacks such as a draw with Burnley, and they also lost to the leaders Arsenal. However, in the latest round they dealt with an out-of-form Aston Villa, thrashing them 4–1 away. In the FA Cup the opponents have been relatively simple so far — but even there they were losing 0–1 and 1–2 to Wrexham, eventually winning only in extra time.

Newcastle are not as strong as last season. The Magpies improved significantly under their current owners and with Eddie Howe as manager. A year ago they even won a title — the EFL Cup — and finished that Premier League campaign in 5th place. Recently Newcastle’s form has looked somewhat uneven, with strong performances followed by unexpected setbacks. Their results in the league have also fluctuated, which has made the battle for European places more complicated than it was a year ago. That finish allowed them to qualify for the Champions League. There the English side reached the playoffs and, after a comfortable passage past Qarabag, they are now battling Barcelona, managing at least a home draw on Tuesday. At the same time they relinquished their League Cup title in the semifinal, where they could do nothing against Manchester City. They faced the same opponent again this week in the FA Cup, and once more things did not go well — finishing with a 1–3 defeat. In the Premier League their results have clearly declined, although they still have chances to remain in the European qualification zone. After a 2–3 loss to Everton, they ended the winning run of Manchester United by defeating them 2–1.
After two consecutive wins for the black and whites, the teams met again at St James’ Park at the end of 2025 and finished with a draw. The match should be quite entertaining. The expectation here is total over 3.0 goals.
