Castellon take on the visitors Cultural Leonesa in the round 31 match of Spanish LaLiga2. The match will be played on Monday, March 23rd at Estadio Municipal de Castalia (Castellón de la Plana).
Castellón spent three straight years at a lower level. But in 2024, they won their group and, notably, secured promotion earlier than anyone else. Then, already in the Segunda División, the team managed to collect 53 points and, although they finished only 17th on tiebreakers, the main thing was that they kept their place at this level. In the new temporada, however, the recent relegation battlers are now involved in a far more ambitious race — for promotion, and even direct promotion, to La Liga. In that regard, it cannot but be worrying that they began the spring with a couple of slip-ups. First, they were held to a draw away to Las Palmas, then they lost to both Racing Santander and Real Sociedad B. In the last round, away to Sporting Gijón, everything ended in a heavy 1-4 defeat.

Cultural Leonesa do not look like a side ready to stay at this level. La Cultu have existed for more than a century, but since 1975 they had spent only one season in the Segunda División before this one — in 2017/2018, and that campaign was unsuccessful. Now, though, the club have gained serious investors from Qatar. As a result, they managed to win their group in Spain’s third tier last season and finally return to the Segunda División. But little has gone right for them there, especially lately. The newcomers have not won since the beginning of December, and recently even draws have become rare — for the most part, the Segunda newcomers have simply been losing. They did at least end the winter with draws against such experienced opponents as Zaragoza and Leganés. But in March they lost 0-3 at home to Las Palmas. There was an identical defeat against Almería. Against the leaders, Racing Santander, they did compete, but still came away empty-handed there as well, eventually losing by a single goal, 1-2.
The clubs met for the first time in September, and Els Orelluts even won away from home, 3-1. The expectation is for a home win here, and quite a confident one at that. But the hosts have not exactly been shining either, just like the visitors, so the more neutral option looks to be under 3.5 goals.
Prediction for the match: Under 3.5 scored goals.
