Brazil take on the visitors Peru in the round 10 match of South American World Cup qualification. The match will be played on Wednesday, October 16th at Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha (Brasília).
Brazil is struggling like never before. The "Pentacampeões" have accustomed fans over the past decades to their problems, particularly their ongoing failure to overcome the quarterfinal hurdle at the World Cup (the last time they did was 10 years ago, at home in 2014, but it ended with that humiliating defeat to Germany). Still, they had always breezed through qualifications. That was the case until last year. Starting the 2023 qualifiers with two wins in the fall, Brazil followed that up with a home draw against Venezuela and then three straight losses. Under Dorival Júnior, who replaced Fernando Diniz at the start of this year, Brazil had some decent friendly matches, but during the Copa América, they only managed to beat Paraguay in the group stage. They were eliminated in the first knockout round by Uruguay in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw. In September’s qualifiers, Brazil barely squeezed out a home win over Ecuador but then lost 0-1 in Paraguay. Now, with key players like Alisson, Militão, and Vinícius Júnior ruled out at the last minute, the match against Chile wasn’t easy either—they secured a comeback win with a goal in the 89th minute.

The "Incas" finally returned to the World Cup stage in 2018 after a decades-long absence since the 1980s. However, they were denied a spot in Qatar by Australia, losing in an intercontinental playoff via penalties after a draw. It seems they’ve never fully recovered from that blow, and there’s been no adequate replacement for their aging stars. Peru has been disastrous in this qualifying campaign, failing to secure a single win and managing just a few draws—against Paraguay and Venezuela last year, and unexpectedly against a strong Colombia side in September. At the same time, during Copa América, they drew 0-0 with Chile but were shut out by both Canada and Argentina. They did, however, pull off a shock win over Uruguay, keeping a clean sheet and scoring the winner in the 88th minute.
Brazil has won 8 of the last 9 meetings, including the last 5 in a row. Brazil is heavily favored to win, and many expect a convincing victory. However, given their current need for results over style, we don’t anticipate an entertaining match. The bet is on "total goals under 2.5".
Prediction for the match: Under 2.5 scored goals.
