St. Pauli are trying to overcome the second-season syndrome. The Buccaneers of the League, after finally returning to the top division, managed not to get relegated this time — even finishing in 14th position. For a long time this season it seemed that the team had declined and had little chance of a successful survival battle. But recently their performances have become more confident, and they have started to collect important points against direct rivals. In February (interestingly, after a heavy 0–3 defeat to Bayer in the cup) they first defeated strong Stuttgart, and a round later also beat Werder, effectively catching up with their competitors. After that they continued quite well, building on their momentum: they also beat Hoffenheim, and recorded a goalless draw with Eintracht.
