Borussia Dortmund have already shown both strengths and weaknesses this season. This week they began their Champions League campaign, leading Juventus by two goals away in Turin, only to concede twice in stoppage time and settle for a dramatic draw. Dortmund’s attack has looked sharp, with multiple players contributing to goals early in the season. Yet their late collapses highlight defensive fragility and a lack of composure in key moments.

Wolfsburg have achieved some decent results from time to time, but in recent years they have mostly struggled for consistency. Last season they finished with just 43 points in 11th place, well below expectations. Naturally, both supporters and the ambitious management demand much more. To push for higher goals, they appointed the young Dutch coach Simonis, who made a name for himself with Go Ahead Eagles. He started with a 9-0 demolition in the cup against Hemelingen, followed by an away Bundesliga win over Hoffenheim. At home against Mainz, however, they were held to a draw, and in September they shared the points again with Köln in a 3-3 thriller. Wolfsburg have looked lively going forward, but their defensive discipline has been questionable, conceding goals in nearly every outing. Their attacking depth could cause problems, but unless the back line tightens up, progress will be limited.
Borussia Dortmund have won four of the last six clashes between the sides, including the most recent two. The other two matches ended in draws, with Wolfsburg advancing on one occasion after a cup tie. It is unlikely that the Black-and-Yellows will slip up twice in the same week. A bet on Dortmund with a -1 handicap looks like the right call.
