Borussia Dortmund take on the visitors Inter in the round 8 match of UEFA Europa League – League Phase. The match will be played on Wednesday, January 28th at Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund).
Borussia Dortmund clearly miscalculated with the decision to appoint Nuri Şahin, a former club player, as head coach. Still, even last season did not turn into a failure: Niko Kovač, who replaced the Turk, managed to lift the team to fourth place. Now Dortmund are trying to secure second place again, although it is obvious that a title challenge is unrealistic, with Bayern already pulling away. At the same time, they were knocked out of the cup by Bayer back in December. In the Champions League, Borussia have been entertaining and mostly successful: in 2025 they recorded three wins while scoring four goals in each, although they were also thrashed 1–4 by Manchester City and had a couple of draws. In the previous round against Tottenham, however, they looked surprisingly toothless, losing 0–2 away from home. Overall, their recent form suggests attacking confidence mixed with occasional lapses against top-level opposition. At home, Dortmund usually play with more intensity, which often translates into goals.

Inter are unlikely to go all out in this match. The Nerazzurri wasted all their opportunities last season, losing several key matches, including the Champions League final. After that heavy defeat, Simone Inzaghi left his post, having already agreed on a move to the Middle East. His successor, Chivu, has already suffered setbacks, both at the Club World Cup in the summer and in January in the Italian Super Cup opener. However, Serie A remains the main focus, as the Milan giants are fighting to reclaim the Scudetto. That priority clearly outweighs their Champions League ambitions, where much was decided by a strong start with four wins against relatively manageable opponents, followed by defeats to Atletico and, amid controversy, Liverpool. They also lost 1–3 to Arsenal in the previous round. Recent results indicate that Inter are rotating their intensity depending on the competition. In Europe, they have shown vulnerability once the schedule became tougher.
In 1994, the clubs exchanged away wins, while in 2019 both victories came at home. Both sides have solid arguments in their favor. As a result, the neutral option looks best here: total over 2.5 goals.
Prediction for the match: Over 2.5 scored goals.
