Borussia Dortmund are no longer fighting for anything meaningful. In some ways, they may even be relieved about that, because everyone remembers last season’s drama. Back then, Niko Kovač, who replaced the unsuccessful Nuri Şahin, only managed to snatch 4th place from SC Freiburg with a desperate late-season surge. This year, however, it became clear long ago that Dortmund would comfortably finish second behind the unstoppable FC Bayern Munich. Dortmund’s recent performances at home have been inconsistent, with the team struggling to maintain intensity against motivated opponents. At the same time, they still remain dangerous offensively and usually create plenty of chances in front of their own fans. On the other hand, the title race effectively died already by winter. The German giants were eliminated from the domestic cup back in 2025, while in the UEFA Champions League they reached the playoffs only to suffer a crushing defeat in Bergamo against Atalanta BC after winning 2-0 at home. It is therefore no surprise that April brought several defeats — at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. They did manage to beat a fairly strong SC Freiburg side afterward, although their opponent was dealing with a very congested schedule. In Mönchengladbach, however, the only goal once again came from the opposition.

Eintracht Frankfurt failed to remain at the same high level. “The Eagles” finished one step above their current opponent in 2025. Yet despite that impressive success, Dino Toppmöller did not even last through the following full season. One of the reasons was a disappointing UEFA Champions League campaign, where the Germans failed to reach the playoffs. Albert Riera arrived already in autumn, but things did not suddenly improve under him either. Frankfurt have looked shaky defensively in recent away matches, especially against teams that press aggressively high up the pitch. Their attacking output has also dropped noticeably over the last few weeks, with the side struggling to convert chances into victories. In reality, spring turned into a battle merely for 7th place, and their rival, despite the burden of the UEFA Europa League, performed at least just as well. Especially considering recent results that included a draw with FC Augsburg and defeats against RB Leipzig and Hamburger SV.
At the beginning of last year, “The Eagles” finally managed to beat this opponent. This season both league meetings ended in draws, although “The Black and Yellows” advanced in the domestic cup. It is about time for Dortmund to get back to winning ways. Saying goodbye to their fans for a long period, they should win at home with a -1.0 handicap.
