Real Betis showed progress again last season. “The Cucumbers” have been playing under Manuel Pellegrini for quite a while. It had seemed they were past their peak, although they did bring a cup to Seville at one point. But in 2024/25 they improved in La Liga, climbing to 6th place with an impressive 60 points. They also reached the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League, though were heavily beaten by Chelsea there. In the new league campaign, however, their start has been far from ideal: they only beat Deportivo Alavés thanks to a lone goal from Giovani Lo Celso, drew 1-1 with Elche and Celta Vigo, and then lost to the first strong opponent they faced, Athletic Bilbao. Even after bringing back Antony, they were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw by Levante. Still, Betis have been creating plenty of chances, averaging over 15 shots per match so far. Their home record also remains solid — they’ve lost just once in their last ten games at the Benito Villamarín Stadium.

Real Sociedadhave had it tough — they only recently reached their peak. Their own academy graduate Imanol Alguacil led them there: winning the cup, finishing 4th in La Liga, and reaching the UEFA Champions League playoffs. But the last few years have been a regression, and last season they finished with just 46 points in 11th place. It was already known that a coaching change would come in San Sebastián. They seemed to want another “Alguacil,” bringing in relatively unknown club man Sergio Francisco. He started with high-scoring draws against Valencia and Espanyol, but then lost away to newcomers Real Oviedo. They began autumn with a match against Real Madrid and, as expected, narrowly lost 1-2. Sociedad’s defense has looked shaky, conceding at least twice in four of their last five matches. Away from home, they’ve picked up just one win in their last eight league games.
In 2024, the “Churri-urdin” beat Betis twice in a row. But in February they lost away 0-3. Neither side are shining, but Betis raise fewer questions, and they’re playing at home — they should get the win.
