Betis take on the visitors Girona in the round 1 match of Spanish LaLiga. The match will be played on Thursday, August 15th at Estadio Benito Villamarín (Sevilla).
"Betis" will try to finally improve. The "Verdiblancos" are an ambitious project with a decent squad. But not much worked out until Manuel Pellegrini returned to Spain. It seemed like the next step, a return to the Champions League, was imminent. Especially with "Sevilla" faltering. However, the neighbors also started losing ground. Even in 2023/2024, despite the excellent play of newcomer Isco, the club slipped to 7th place – as a result, they remain in the Conference League, but will still need to go through the qualification stage. At the same time, improvement is clearly needed in La Liga as well. We'll see what happens, at least the squad is changing notably: Miranda, Borja Iglesias, Willian José, and Guido Rodríguez have left, while Adrián, Diego Llorente, and Ricardo Rodríguez have joined.

"Girona" are still a relatively new name in Spanish football. They have only played 4 seasons at the Primera level, and just two years ago, they returned to La Liga through the playoffs. They immediately did quite well – the newcomers in 2023 finished close to the playoff zone. But then came a real fairytale last season, when this modest club, with limited financial resources but excellent scouts and a talented coach, Míchel Sánchez, led the standings for a significant part of the campaign. In the end, "Real" and "Barcelona" finished higher – but the 3rd position was still a genuine sensation. Naturally, after such success, the stars began to be sold off. The La Liga top scorer, Dovbyk, could have ended up at "Atletico," but he went to "Roma." Earlier, Aleix Garcia was sold to "Bayer," and Yan Couto moved to "Borussia Dortmund" via "Manchester City." However, despite not spending much, they have strengthened with promising names such as Donny van de Beek, Oriol Romeu, Bryan Gil, Ladislav Krejci, and Abel Ruiz – potentially broadening the squad even further.
"Verdiblancos" had an excellent record against "Girona." But last season, Míchel's side managed to take 4 out of a possible 6 points in their head-to-head encounters. "Verdiblancos" are considered the favorites at home. But the visitors look solid and should at least avoid defeat.
