Betis are trying to improve their form during the final stretch of the season. “Los Verdiblancos” have never lacked ambition, but for years they struggled to fully convert that into consistent results despite having a solid squad. Everything changed after the decision to bring Manuel Pellegrini back to Spain. Manuel once again proved in Seville that he knows how to get results from motivated and well-organized sides. Betis have looked more dangerous offensively in recent weeks, especially at home, where they continue to play with high intensity and confidence. However, defensive mistakes and occasional lapses in concentration have still prevented the team from putting together a truly dominant run of results. This season things initially looked even more promising, but spring was not particularly successful for the green-and-white side. One especially painful moment came in the Europa League quarterfinals, when after drawing in Portugal, Betis quickly scored twice at home but then collapsed against SC Braga. In La Liga, there were also enough setbacks and dropped points. Only after their European elimination did they manage to beat Girona FC and rescue a draw against Real Madrid CF. Then, following an expected win over Real Oviedo, they produced an entertaining 2-2 draw with Real Sociedad.

Elche had reached La Liga before, but in recent years it increasingly felt as though they were stuck in the Segunda División while producing very mediocre results there. Then, during the summer before last, Rubén Sarabia arrived as head coach and immediately transformed the side into promotion contenders, guiding them back to La Liga at the first attempt. Back in the top flight, they also started very actively, winning often and collecting points on a regular basis before eventually fading. Their revival only came after dropping into the relegation zone, which forced the team to wake up and start winning again during the spring months. After also overcoming Real Oviedo, however, Elche then lost to RC Celta de Vigo and could only draw with Deportivo Alavés.
Betis have won five of the last eight meetings between the clubs, suffering only one defeat in that stretch. The August encounter ended in a draw, although in January Betis eliminated Elche from the cup after a 2-1 victory. The experienced hosts are once again looking solid.
