Belgium take on Romania in the round 2 match of UEFA Euro-2024 group stage. The match will be played on Saturday, June 22nd at RheinEnergieStadion (Cologne).
Eighteen matches have already been played in the tournament, and in 11 of them, the result was either a draw or one team won by just one goal. So far, the top teams in the group stage are not performing at their full potential. Those that are playing well are still struggling to secure confident victories over their lower-ranked but very resilient opponents. The Belgian National Team has become one of the tournament's main disappointments so far. The "Red Devils" lost 0-1 to Slovakia in their first match, which not only disappointed their fans but also those placing bets on them. There is a lot of talk about how Belgium played better and were simply unlucky. Romelu Lukaku has already become a meme of the Euro in just 90 minutes. He missed his chances, took away a sure goal from a teammate, and even when he finally scored, the referee disallowed it. I believe Belgium's struggles are far from over. To secure even a narrow win against Romania, Domenico Tedesco’s team will have to put in a lot of effort.

Romania, on the other hand, was written off by everyone even before their game against Ukraine, but the "Chickens" went on to thrash the highly-rated team of Serhiy Rebrov. They had some luck, and their opponent made mistakes that led to goals. Two out of the three goals were scored from long-range shots. However, as they like to say on our site, the scoreboard speaks for itself, and no one can deny that Eduard Iordănescu's team deserved that victory. The next challenge for the "Yellows" is the angry Belgian team, which has had no luck in recent major tournaments and is still struggling at Euro 2024 in Germany. Let’s not forget that Romania did not lose a single match in their qualifying group, with six wins and four draws. They even played well against Switzerland twice (1-0 and 2-2), which has so far accumulated three points in Euro and has not lost a match.
A straightforward victory for Belgium, which is naturally considered the favorite, seems unlikely here. At least, I would be surprised if a team with the unlucky Lukaku, a non-top young generation, and aging players from the golden generation managed to confidently defeat the "Chickens." Romania is very good at playing disciplined football, including playing on the counter. They can bide their time and fend off the opponent's attacks, which is likely what they will need to do throughout the match.
Prediction for the match: Romania to win with +1.5 handicap.
