Still, in La Liga the title race had practically lost all suspense by mid-spring. After the victory over CA Osasuna, Barcelona now need just one more point — although it is obvious they would prefer to seal the title against their historic rivals.

Real Madrid are already preparing for next season. “Los Blancos” have become hostages to their own history and ambitions. After losing every domestic trophy in Spain to the Catalans last season, Carlo Ancelotti was dismissed once again. The club then turned to Xabi Alonso, who had once starred in Madrid’s midfield. Under Álvaro Arbeloa, “Los Blancos” were immediately knocked out of the Copa del Rey by modest Albacete Balompié. The Champions League campaign went somewhat better, as Madrid eliminated SL Benfica and Manchester City FC in the playoffs, only to run into FC Bayern Munich and lose both matches despite putting up a fight. At the same time, more dropped points in La Liga killed off the title intrigue, allowing Barcelona to build a serious lead after briefly falling behind earlier in the season. Following a draw with Real Betis Balompié, Madrid were in danger of officially surrendering top spot last round already. But after beating RCD Espanyol, they at least mathematically prolonged the race.
Barcelona have won four El Clásicos in a row, including the 3-2 extra-time victory in the cup final. Xabi Alonso did manage to beat the Catalans earlier in the autumn, but then lost to them again in the Super Cup. Barcelona should be fully motivated to secure the title with a victory here.
