Barcelona take on the visitors Getafe in the round 5 match of Spanish LaLiga. The match will be played on Sunday, September 21st at Estadi Johan Cruyff (Barcelona).
Barcelona made a huge leap forward last season. With Xavi in 2023/2024 they failed to win a single trophy, but under Hansi Flick they conquered everything possible in Spanish football, from the Supercopa to the Copa del Rey, defeating Real Madrid convincingly in both finals as well as in La Liga. Their Champions League run, however, was suddenly halted by Inter. In the new campaign, even with a couple of exciting signings, the giants did not start particularly convincingly. Against Levante they trailed 0-2 at halftime but managed to turn it around for a win. Against Rayo Vallecano they were content with just a draw. After the international break, hosting Valencia, they produced a 6-0 demolition even without several injured leaders. Later, in England against Newcastle, Marcus Rashford finally shone with a brace that secured another victory. Barcelona’s attack has looked increasingly fluid, and several new arrivals have quickly adapted to Flick’s system. Still, defensive lapses remain a concern, especially in matches where they are expected to dominate comfortably.

Getafe are unlikely to deliver surprises. The Azulones are not nearly as strong now as they were during José Bordalás’ previous tenure. Back then they finished 5th in La Liga and reached the Europa League playoffs, but since his return he has mainly been tasked with keeping the club safe from relegation. Last season they finished in a relatively solid 13th place with 42 points, but that was only two points above relegated Leganés. This season the Madrid side are trying to improve. They even claimed two away victories at the start, against Celta Vigo and Sevilla. But that was followed by a heavy 0-3 defeat away to Valencia. Entering September, they managed a strong 2-0 home win against newly promoted Oviedo. Getafe have shown they can be resilient against mid-table opposition, but against the league’s giants they usually struggle to keep pace. Their lack of consistent goal-scoring power makes it difficult for them to compete in matches where they are forced to chase the game.
Getafe have not beaten their illustrious rival since 2020. However, three of the last five encounters ended in draws. The Blaugrana have been showing solid form this month. The recommendation here is to back the champions to win with a -1.5 goal handicap.
Prediction for the match: Barcelona to win with -1.5 handicap.
