Barcelona take on the visitors Betis in the round 37 match of Spanish LaLiga. The match will be played on Sunday, May 17th at Camp Nou (Barcelona).
Barcelona finished the 2023/2024 campaign without a single trophy. That was when Hansi Flick arrived at an ambitious but financially troubled project, and the only area where he arguably underdelivered was the Champions League. Domestically, however, he got the better of Real Madrid CF across every competition. This time, though, another Madrid side, Atlético Madrid, prevented them from matching or exceeding that success — following an identical script of “losing the first leg too heavily and not scoring enough for a remontada in the return,” first in the Copa del Rey and then in the Champions League. Barcelona’s recent league form has understandably dipped after the title race was effectively settled, with intensity levels clearly dropping. Even so, over the broader stretch of the campaign, they remained the most dominant side in Spain by consistency and control. Still, they beat the Galacticos in the Super Cup back when Xabi Alonso was still in charge, and then pulled away to an unreachable distance in La Liga after El Clásico. In the emotional aftermath, they even slipped up against relegation battlers Deportivo Alavés.

Betis had a good season, but it still left a taste of disappointment. Los Verdiblancos struck gold when they appointed Manuel Pellegrini. The experienced Chilean continues in Seville what he has done successfully before in Spain: extracting strong results from an ambitious upper-mid-table side. Their Copa del Rey triumph stands out, while last year they also reached the Conference League final, though they lost there to Chelsea F.C.. This season brought an even more painful stumble: in the higher-profile Europa League quarter-finals, after a 1-1 draw in Portugal, they went two goals up at home only to collapse and lose to S.C. Braga. Betis have at least steadied themselves domestically in recent weeks, picking up points in matches where earlier in the spring they might have fallen short. Their resilience in the league race has kept them competitive despite obvious emotional disappointment from Europe. At that same time, little was going right in La Liga either, but the catch was that their rivals were doing even worse, allowing them to hold onto 5th place. That included a 2-1 away win over Elche CF.
Of course, the advantage historically lies very clearly with “More Than a Club.” But in the last four meetings, Barcelona have managed only two wins, with the other two ending in draws. Prediction for Barcelona vs Betis: the hosts no longer need anything, and several key players are injured. Back the visitors from Seville with a +1.5 goal handicap.
Prediction for the match: Betis to win with +1.5 handicap.
