Atletico continue to underwhelm. The "Colchoneros" have now been managed by the same coach for a record stretch of time. Yet last season brought only a modest return despite heavy investment in the squad — just 3rd place in La Liga and another year without silverware. Their start to the new campaign has been equally uninspiring. They opened with a lifeless defeat to Espanyol, then had to settle for draws against modest Elche and Alaves. In the Champions League, facing Liverpool, they quickly went 0-2 down, fought back to equalize, but conceded to Van Dijk in stoppage time to lose 2-3. Afterwards, there was only a 1-1 draw with Mallorca. In the last round, they trailed against local rivals Rayo Vallecano but struck twice late to claim a 3-2 win. That comeback may inject some much-needed belief, but overall Atletico have looked far from consistent. They remain vulnerable defensively, having kept just one clean sheet in their last six fixtures.

Real Madrid are no strangers to winning, and last season they collected both the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. But those triumphs came in the previous calendar year, while 2025 has so far yielded no trophies. Carlo Ancelotti paid the price with his job, and even under Xabi Alonso, with several high-profile new arrivals, their Club World Cup campaign ended in a heavy defeat to PSG. In Europe, there was controversy against Marseille, as Kylian Mbappé scored twice from questionable penalties to secure a win. Domestically, however, Real brushed aside opposition with ease — including a promising Espanyol side and promoted Levante. The latter were thrashed 4-1 in a dominant display. Real currently sit top of the league table, having won all five of their opening games. Their attack looks sharp, averaging nearly three goals per game, while the defense has been largely solid aside from isolated lapses.
Seven of the last eight Madrid derbies have ended in draws, with only one victory for Simeone’s men in that span. In spring’s Champions League clashes, the clubs split results, each winning at home.
