Atletico Madrid take on the visitors Eintracht Frankfurt in the round 2 match of UEFA Champions League group stage. The match will be played on Tuesday, September 30th at Metropolitano Stadium (Madrid).
Atletico once again struggle at the start of the season. The Mattress Makers are the longest-running of the giants without changing managers — Diego Simeone has held the post for years and achieved plenty. However, last season can hardly be called a success, given the heavy summer spending on a squad rebuild — in the end only third place in La Liga (which was never really under threat, since there was no new “Girona” in 2024/25) and defeats in other competitions to their familiar rivals, Real Madrid and Barcelona. After the break they immediately lost tamely in the opening round to modest Espanyol, and further slip-ups followed. On Anfield they quickly conceded twice, and though a Llorente brace seemed to bring a comeback draw, they still let Van Dijk score from a corner late on. On the other hand, they bounced back with a 5-2 derby win over Real Madrid on Saturday, which should serve as a boost. Atletico’s attack looked far more fluid in that derby, with Morata and Griezmann linking up impressively. Still, their defensive lapses remain a major concern, especially against elite European opposition.

Eintracht Frankfurt were one of the big surprises of last season. Even while focusing on the Europa League, where they reached the knockout rounds, and selling their most dangerous player Omar Marmoush to Manchester City in January, they still finished third in the Bundesliga — only Bayern and Leverkusen collected more points. In the summer they also sold Hugo Ekitike, who is now scoring for Liverpool. Yet Dino Toppmöller’s men began the new season with victories both in the cup and the Bundesliga. After the international break, however, they fell 1-3 to Leverkusen, a reminder that they have weaknesses too. But immediately after that setback came their Champions League opener, where they demolished Galatasaray 5-1. Eintracht have shown they can be ruthless in attack, spreading the goals among several players rather than relying on one star. Defensively they remain inconsistent, but their pressing game often unsettles opponents.
This will be the first time the Spanish side host Eintracht Frankfurt at the Metropolitano. Simeone’s men are clear favorites at home. Still, the visitors are dangerous enough to cause problems — the smart bet is on the Germans with a +1.0 handicap.
Prediction for the match: Eintracht to win with +1.0 handicap.
