At the same time, domestically they exited the cups early and started the Premier League campaign poorly, but by winter had climbed into 3rd place and are trying to finish there — with a top-5 spot already looking secure. Liverpool have clearly lost ground, but are trying to avoid a complete collapse. The Reds said goodbye to Jürgen Klopp after the season before last. The club exited the domestic cups early, twice at the hands of Crystal Palace F.C., while in the Champions League they lost both quarter-final matches against Paris Saint-Germain F.C.. In the Premier League, they even slipped toward mid-table at times, though a run of victories in spring lifted them back into the top five and created some breathing room over their rivals. But they then lost to Manchester United F.C. and could only manage a draw against inconsistent Chelsea F.C..
