Aston Villa are trying to keep up on all fronts. Last season, effectively making their Champions League debut, the Villans managed to reach the play-offs, where everything eventually ended with a defeat to the future winners, PSG. At the same time, they narrowly missed out in the Premier League, finishing behind Newcastle only on tiebreakers. As a result, Emery had to return to his trademark competition, the Europa League. At the same time, Villa’s overall position remains strong enough to expect a reaction at home.

Brighton had already broken into European competition under De Zerbi. Naturally, with Hurzeler appointed before last season, the hope was to return there again. Overall, the revamped side looked very solid in 2024/2025, finishing eighth, and only Crystal Palace’s cup triumph denied them a place in the Conference League. This season, Brighton were keen to push on, but they have clearly lacked consistency. Still, the table is tight enough that if not a top-four spot, then at least seventh place remains realistic. However, there have been plenty of setbacks in recent rounds. At the weekend they even lost to Crystal Palace, who ended a long winless run thanks to that result. On the other hand, Brighton did manage to knock Manchester United out of the cup. Recent league form shows fluctuating performances from match to match. Away games in particular have made it harder for them to build momentum.
