AS Roma take on the visitors Genoa in the round 17 match of Italian Serie A. The match will be played on Monday, December 29th at Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
Roma have been unable to return to the Champions League for quite a long time. Last season was also unsuccessful in that regard, even though Ranieri, who came out of retirement to pull the club out of a prolonged crisis, finished just one point behind Juventus. Still, his successor once again has to focus on the familiar Europa League, where there have already been a few slip-ups, although qualification for the playoffs is not really under threat. Things are going well in the domestic cup for now. Most importantly, the unexpectedly pragmatic Giallorossi under Gasperini have not only improved in Serie A, but are also fighting for the top positions there. In the last round, there was another clash with a direct rival, Juventus, and although Roma managed to score, they conceded twice in response and suffered a rather symbolic defeat. Even so, their overall league form remains solid, with points being collected regularly against mid-table opponents. At home, Roma have generally looked more stable, showing an ability to control matches despite occasional setbacks against top rivals.

Genoa are changing coaches again in search of transformation. The Griffins avoided such reshuffles only in the season before last, their first one back in Serie A. However, Gilardino, who led the club up from the second division and kept them in the top flight, failed to cope with a host of problems at the start of the 2024/2025 campaign. Alberto was replaced by Patrick Vieira, and the team noticeably improved, eventually climbing into the middle of the table. After the summer break, though, even under the French coach, wins came only in the cup competitions. Once again, it was only after another dismissal that the team showed signs of life, although ironically they suffered a heavy 0–4 defeat to Atalanta in the Coppa. Facing the same Bergamo side again in Serie A, Genoa were reduced to ten men very early, so the final 0–1 loss can be considered relatively respectable. Recent league results show that Genoa remain inconsistent, alternating competitive performances with clear struggles. Away from home in particular, they often lack the momentum needed to turn tight matches in their favor.
The Roman club are clearly more successful overall. However, in the last four meetings, they have suffered one defeat and settled for a draw, both of those results coming in Genoa. The capital’s Wolves simply cannot afford another slip-up. The bet here is on Roma to secure a home win and take a full three points.
