AS Monaco largely created these problems themselves — or rather through the decisions of their management. Adi Hütter arrived in 2023 and immediately delivered 2nd and then 3rd place finishes in Ligue 1, but he was dismissed after the first signs of trouble this season. Under Francesco Pognoli, however, the core issues have still not really been solved. Monaco’s recent form has become extremely inconsistent, with impressive victories suddenly followed by frustrating dropped points against weaker opposition. Their defensive reliability has especially declined in the final stretch of the season, making even home matches far less predictable than before. Monaco still managed to reach the UEFA Champions League playoffs, but there they were immediately eliminated by domestic rivals Paris Saint-Germain FC after a hard-fought tie. In the cup, they were knocked out by RC Strasbourg Alsace back in early February. Still, after fully focusing on Ligue 1, the team improved during the spring in an attempt to salvage the campaign. They even put together a six-match winning streak in the league, beating RC Lens, PSG, and Olympique Lyonnais along the way. But then came a sudden defeat to Paris FC, followed by disappointing 2-2 draws against AJ Auxerre and Toulouse FC. Only struggling FC Metz were beaten, and even that ended only 2-1.

Lille are fighting until the very end. “Les Dogues” looked respectable in last season’s Champions League, but amid fierce domestic competition they finished only 5th in Ligue 1, despite OGC Nice collecting the same 60 points and Monaco only one more. As a result, Lille had to settle for the UEFA Europa League, where they reached the playoffs and eliminated FK Crvena zvezda before being comfortably beaten by Aston Villa FC. Their league form over the past few weeks has been fairly solid overall, especially defensively, as the team continue to concede very few clear chances. At the same time, Lille have struggled at times to turn territorial dominance into convincing victories, which has kept the race for the top positions extremely tense. In the domestic cup, they lost at home to Lyon immediately after New Year. That left Ligue 1 as their only focus for the spring, and in most recent rounds they managed to keep winning. Only modest Nice avoided defeat against them in April, holding Lille scoreless away from home. On the other hand, after a narrow win over Paris FC, they again dropped points by drawing 1-1 with struggling Le Havre AC.
“Les Dogues” have won four of the last seven meetings between the sides, including the last two in a row, while suffering only one defeat during that stretch. This is one of those matches where both sides need nothing but victory. Expect an entertaining game here, with over 2.5 total goals looking like the best betting option.
