Arsenal take on the visitors Atletico Madid in the second leg of UEFA Champions League semifinals. First leg result: 1-1. The match will be played on Tuesday, May 5th at Emirates Stadium (London).
Arsenal seemed to have grown enough to confirm their return to elite status by finally winning a title — after finishing 2nd in the Premier League three times in a row. They even had a comfortable lead this season… but it melted away in April, when they first lost at home to AFC Bournemouth and then were beaten in Manchester by Manchester City. Their recent form has clearly dipped, with the team struggling to maintain consistency in key moments. Confidence has taken a hit, especially after failing to close out games where they previously looked dominant. It is also worth recalling that March ended with a defeat in the League Cup final to Guardiola’s side. After the break, they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton FC. It is no surprise that even in the UEFA Champions League, after eight wins in the main round, they nearly lost in Leverkusen — only managing to equalize late, before securing a confident 2-0 win at home against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Against Sporting CP, they squeezed out a 1-0 win in Lisbon and then settled for a goalless draw at home.

Atlético Madrid can only save their season here. “Los Colchoneros” aim to position themselves as equals to Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, but in recent years they have fallen behind not only them, but even lost 3rd place in 2024 to the surprise package Girona FC. Now a more experienced Villarreal CF is challenging for that bronze position. Their recent performances in knockout competitions show resilience, especially when playing with a result advantage. However, in domestic matches, inconsistency continues to prevent them from fully asserting themselves. They could have compensated with cup success, but after eliminating Barcelona in the semifinals, they lost the final on penalties to Real Sociedad. That leaves only the Champions League. There, after an unconvincing main round (4 wins, 13 points), they relatively comfortably knocked out Club Brugge and Tottenham Hotspur. In the semifinals, they repeated a familiar trick: winning the first leg with enough margin to progress despite losing the second. Against the English side, the home leg ended in a draw, with both goals coming from penalties, each decision being controversial.
Back in 2018, Atlético knocked out Arsenal in the Europa League — 1-0 in Madrid after a 1-1 draw in London. However, in a more recent meeting, Diego Simeone’s side suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat away. Arsenal should still be able to deliver at home. Back “The Gunners” to win in regular time.
Prediction for the match: Arsenal to win.
