Argeș return to the top flight. The “Violet Eagles” were founded in the mid-20th century and had moments of glory, both in the league and domestic cup, though those achievements came in the 1960s and 70s. More recently, the club spent time in the second division following scandals related to match-fixing and bankruptcy nearly a decade ago. Fortunately, they bounced back and earned promotion to Romania’s top tier again last season, finishing first in Liga II. That success came under coach Bogdan Andone, who had only taken charge in September but managed to quickly shape the team into title contenders. However, their pre-season form was mixed, and they enter the new campaign knowing they'll face far tougher, more seasoned opposition in Liga I.

Rapid (Bucharest) were once consistent title challengers and regular cup winners, but their golden era ended at the start of the 21st century. A full club restart was required in the mid-2010s, followed by a string of promotions back to the top division. Since returning, however, they have struggled to assert themselves at the highest level, and last season was no exception. They did finish in the top six after the regular season and outperformed local rival Dinamo in the championship round. Still, a fifth-place finish meant missing out on European football once again — largely due to a poor start to the campaign that left them playing catch-up behind Universitatea. Recent friendlies showed some promising signs, but consistency remains a concern.
Rapid had won three straight official matches before the most recent clash at the end of 2022 ended in a draw. The Bucharest side remains the stronger team on paper. We back them to start the new season with a confident win.
