América Mineiro are collapsing even at this level. The “Rabbits” have never been a particularly successful club, but not so long ago they played in the Brasileirão and looked competitive enough. Since then, they’ve endured around ten rounds without a single victory, managing just draws against Athletico Paranaense and Amazonas. If this continues, they are on course for a shocking relegation to the third tier. Recent defensive frailties have been especially damaging, with the team conceding multiple goals in nearly every outing. Even home matches have provided little comfort, as the pressure from fans grows week by week.

Avaí have occasionally managed to break into the top division of Brazilian football, but in general they are more of a solid mid-table side in Serie B. That was the case last season, when they finished 10th with 14 wins and 53 points. Now, the ambition is to do better, though consistency remains an issue. In recent weeks they’ve been alternating between wins and draws, which has at least allowed them to reduce the gap to the top four. In the last round, hosting Amazonas, they dramatically equalized in stoppage time but conceded again moments later, eventually losing 1-2. Despite that setback, their attack has been producing goals regularly, keeping them competitive in most matches. With their away form improving compared to last season, they have every reason to believe they can stay in the promotion race.
In 2022, at the Serie A level, the clubs exchanged home victories. Last season, in Serie B, both matches ended in draws. Earlier this year in April, Avaí delivered a confident 3-0 win at home.
