AIK take on the visitors GAIS in the round 16 match of Swedish Allsvenskan. The match will be played on Monday, July 29th at Strawberry Arena (Solna).
AIK was recently among the best in national football. It’s not just about the 12th league title they secured in 2018. They finished second twice in a row before that, as well as in 2021. However, last season, the capital club finished outside the top 10. This season, there were hopes of at least improving on last year's 11th place. A five-match unbeaten streak at the start was promising, but since then, they've only managed to secure victories against three opponents amidst a slew of defeats. Even in the last round, after leading 2-1 against Halmstad, they conceded goals at the end of each half, failing to respond, against their current opponent.

GAIS Is finally back among the best. The "Mackerels" certainly remember the achievements of previous generations—winning cups and championships multiple times. However, they spent the last 11 years in the country's second division. They emerged from Superettan only by finishing in second place—not a triumphant return, but a return nonetheless. Initially, the club was seen as one of the main underdogs at this level, starting with a 0-4 home defeat to Brommapojkarna. But they managed to win the next match, 2-1 against Värnamo. They continued to win most of their matches, occasionally interspersed with defeats, until late spring. The summer began poorly, with a 0-0 draw against Hammarby and a couple of losses. However, they broke this streak with a 2-0 victory against AIK in the last round.
Before last week's defeat, the capital club had four consecutive victories over this opponent. If GAIS could win so comfortably at home, they have a good chance of grabbing points on the road as well. We expect the visitors from Gothenburg to avoid a loss to the hosts.
