Afturelding take on the visitors Breidablik in the round 14 match of Icelandic Besta Deild Karla. The match will be played on Thursday, July 3rd at Varmárvöllur (Mosfellsbaer).
Afturelding have finally reached the top flight. The red and blacks have traditionally found more success in other sports—especially volleyball and handball, including women's teams. Their football department remained in the shadows for years, competing at a modest level until last season’s breakthrough: promotion to Iceland’s top division. Even that came with great difficulty—they finished only fourth in the regular season but managed to secure promotion through the playoffs. At the higher level, the newcomers began collecting points right from their first home match, and soon after, they started picking up wins on home soil. They suffered two straight defeats at the end of May but responded well with back-to-back victories. In the previous round, they put up a solid fight against league leaders Vikingur Reykjavik but eventually lost 1-2 in a respectable effort. Afturelding have now scored in five of their last six matches and have proven to be competitive against stronger sides, especially at home.

Breidablik have risen to the top tier of Icelandic football in recent years. After lifting the Icelandic Cup in 2009, they went on to win the league title three times—most recently in 2022 and 2024. Last season, they added the League Cup to their collection, and after the winter break, also secured the Super Cup. However, their current league campaign has been uneven, with dropped points in nearly half of their matches, including back-to-back losses at the end of May. That inconsistency has left them trailing Vikingur Reykjavik in the title race. In their most recent fixture, they bounced back impressively with a dominant 4-1 away win over Stjarnan, reaffirming their ambitions to stay in the hunt for the championship. With Champions League qualifiers looming next week, squad rotation could come into play, although the team will still aim to maintain domestic momentum. Despite mixed form, Breidablik remain one of the league’s top-scoring sides and have won four of their last five away matches.
There have been eight meetings between these teams. Blikar have won seven of them, including their spring encounter, and lost only once—back in 2008. The visitors appear clearly more confident—back Breidablik to claim an away win.
Prediction for the match: Breidablik to win.
