AC Milan take on the visitors Atalanta in the round 36 match of Italian Serie A. The match will be played on Sunday, May 10th at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (San Siro) (Milan).
AC Milan won a lot under Stefano Pioli, including the Serie A title. However, after he was dismissed in the summer of 2024, the club collapsed from 2nd place to 8th, while also losing the domestic cup final and suffering an early elimination in the UEFA Champions League playoffs. Yes, they did manage to lift the Supercoppa, but that was only minor compensation. As a result, Massimiliano Allegri returned to San Siro in the summer. Milan’s home form has become noticeably less convincing in recent weeks, with the team struggling to impose itself against well-organized opponents. Even their victories lately have often looked far less comfortable than expected for a club fighting near the top of the table. Allegri did not impress much in the cup competitions, but in Serie A his side became the main challenger to neighboring rivals FC Internazionale Milano. Milan even won the derby in the spring, but then suddenly began losing far too often, putting their second place under serious threat. Following a goalless draw against Juventus FC, they then lost 0-2 in the previous round to an already unmotivated US Sassuolo Calcio.

Atalanta have largely justified the skepticism surrounding them. “La Dea” had long been associated with Gian Piero Gasperini, the coach who transformed a modest mid-table side into one of Italy’s footballing flagships and even guided them to a UEFA Europa League triumph. In his final season, 2024/2025, Atalanta also finished 3rd in Serie A. However, replacing Gasperini with Ivan Jurić turned out to be a failed experiment. He was replaced rather quickly by Raffaele Palladino, who has been trying to stabilize the situation ever since. Atalanta’s recent performances have lacked consistency, especially away from home, where the team have struggled to control matches for long periods. Their attack still produces dangerous moments, but defensive concentration has become a recurring issue during the final stretch of the season. Not everything has worked out, though. In the Champions League, after reaching the playoffs and eliminating Borussia Dortmund, they could do nothing against FC Bayern Munich. In the cup, they lost to SS Lazio on penalties in the semi-finals. In Serie A, meanwhile, they never came close to the top four and instead stumbled more and more frequently during the spring. It even reached the point where they lost 2-3 to modest Cagliari Calcio, who had nothing left to fight for. In the latest round, they also failed to score against Genoa CFC, settling for a 0-0 draw.
“La Dea” are unbeaten in six consecutive meetings against Milan and have won four of them. However, the October clash ended only in a 1-1 draw in Bergamo. Given the current form of both sides, this is unlikely to become a spectacular encounter. Backing under 3.0 total goals looks like the safest option here.
