West Ham take on the visitors Lyon in the first leg of UEFA Europa League quarterfinals. The match will be played on Thursday, April 7th at Olympic Stadium (London).
The club under David Moyes surprised, perhaps, even itself. Of course, there were ambitions before, and Gold and Sullivan spent a lot of money on both players and status managers. But with the Scotsman, who was originally called just to avoid relegation in the midst of the crisis, which led to Pellegrini, managed to seriously swing to high places. In the Europa League this season the Hummers were able to win the group, so the playoffs started only with the round of 1/8 finals. But there was perhaps the strongest possible opponent, Sevilla, for whom this is a "home" tournament. But, having lost in Spain 0-1, the English at home were able to win with the right result to pass - they scored a couple of unanswered goals.

Lyon are traditionally considered a contender for a place in the top three - but the last time they managed to climb so high in 2019. And in the last season the 4th position was taken. To take at least one more step, in 2021, Peter Boss was invited. But so far, the Dutchman is failing in the domestic arena. Now, after 30 rounds only 45 points have been taken - and this is only the 9th place. Lyon are forced to save the season (and, most likely, work for his mentor) through the Europa League. There, the French gave a benefit to the group, winning all 5 first matches of the fall. And, most importantly, last month, in the 1/8 finals, the "weavers" knocked out a strong "Porto". Lucas Paketa scored the only goal on the road, so 1-1 was enough at home.
West Ham have almost never played in European Cups before this season. So for the first time we have to play with almost all our opponents in the Europa League, including Lyon. West Ham do not count on Zoufal and Ogbonne. Lyon will not have Sherki and Diomand on the field. Bookmakers believe that, at least in their field, the favorite will be "West Ham".
