Rouen take on the visitors Monaco in the round of 1/8-finals of Coupe de France. The match will be played on Thursday, February 8th at Stade Robert Diochon (Rouen).
Rouen are on a great streak. The Red Devils showed their best results during the most difficult times. They were champions twice, in 1940, but only in the occupied northern zone, and in 1945, already in the liberated country – but that title was not officially recognized. Over more than 125 years of history, they can add only a couple of cup finals, which they lost in 1925 and 1964. Over time, the team declined to a semi-amateur level. However, firstly, they returned from there last year, rising to League 3. Secondly, at the new level, they confidently hold their ground among the mid-table teams. And, most importantly in terms of the current tournament, they are progressing steadily through the rounds. In the last stage, this underdog eliminated Toulouse, the trophy holder from 2023. Moreover, Toulouse equalized in the 90th+ minute, and in the penalty shootout with all 11 players hitting accurately, but on the 12th kick, the Tefece faltered.

Monaco are trying to regain the positions lost last season. The Monegasques have failed to repeat the success of 2017, when a very young Mbappe and a bunch of other talents became champions of Ligue 1. Rybolovlev's stars have gradually been sold off, but in 2021 and 2022, this did not prevent Golovin and company from finishing in a high third position. However, last season was disappointing: only 6th place, outside of the Euro arena. Adi Hutter was brought in to fix the situation. There has indeed been some progress under him, but it's still too early to say that the popular project has reclaimed its place in the top three. Moreover, there have been quite a few setbacks, and there is a risk of falling back to the results of the previous cycle – the peloton, in the best French traditions, is closely contested, and a couple of successful results or setbacks immediately affect the table. The experienced Austrian certainly understands this. Although in the cup, his team was eliminated by Lens only in a penalty shootout.
The sides have always been on very different levels. They could only meet in the country's cup, and now it has happened for the first time. Considering the divisions in which the opponents play, success is expected for Monaco. But the hosts are in a situation of nothing to lose, so it's worth considering total over 3.0 goals scored.
Prediction for the match: Over 3.0 scored goals.
