Ponferradina has spent the last decade and a half trying to gain a foothold in the Segunda. At first, the debutant stayed there for a year. In 2012, La Deportiva even took 7th place, but after three years it was eliminated again. The club returned to the 2nd division of Spain only in 2019. And it has managed to step up in recent seasons. At first, Ponferradina took 18th place and was on the verge of relegation to Segunda B. But in the previous season, the White-Blues finished in 8th position. And now they are among the contenders not even for the playoff zone but for direct promotion. So far, the 1st place seems to be reserved for Almeria, which has a quite large margin from the competitors. But as many as four clubs are fighting for the 2nd position, which also gives a direct ticket to La Liga. And Ponferradina is among them. It has scored 37 points in 21 matches and is two points behind Eibar.
Ponferradina was stronger both in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons. The club scored four points in both draws. But in October, Real Oviedo managed to end an unpleasant streak by winning 1-2 away.
