Paraguay does not pretend to be the grandee of Latin American football. And, most importantly, the Paraguayan national team is in the lower part of the qualification standings. In June, it suffered a defeat from Brazil and gained a goalless draw with Uruguay. In the last round, the White-Reds lost to Ecuador (2-0).

The Colombians became bronze medalists at the Copa America. They looked mediocre in the group, having beaten only Ecuador. But in the playoffs, they managed to eliminate Uruguay (on penalties), and then lost to the future winner Argentina in the penalty shootout. And only in the "consolation final", the Colombians showed a goal extravaganza and beat Peru with a 3-2 score. Diaz became the hero and scored a double, including the decisive goal in the 4th added minute. The decision not to call up James was generally justified. This footballer also didn’t play in the match against Bolivia, and Falcao appeared on the pitch only in the ending.
