Moreirense take on the visitors Casa Pia in the round 16 match of Liga Portugal. The match will be played on Monday, January 8th at Parque Joaquim de Almeida Freitas (Moreira de Conegos).
Moreirense achieved their main successes in the last decade over nearly 90 years of their history. This includes winning the League Cup in 2017 (with the only goal in the final against Braga, scored from the penalty spot) and, two years later, securing a maximum 6th place in the championship. However, their time in the top division has been relatively short overall. Players left the Primeira Liga again in 2022, losing playoff matches to Chaves. Moreover, the newcomers, who were expected to have a challenging start (1 win in 5 rounds, incidentally, against Chaves, and 4 points), started an unbeaten streak since the end of September. It has now reached 10 consecutive rounds of the championship, and despite a 0-0 draw with Vizela, which became the third draw in 4 matches, they manage to spend the winter break in 6th position, with chances for European competitions.

Casa Pia secured a couple of victories in time. The White and Blue are based in Lisbon. Like any capital, the metropolis in Portugal is filled with various football clubs. Here, you have the main giants, Sporting and Benfica, while this particular team is not even playing a major role. Showing something only shortly after its foundation, the team then spent a long time in the shadows, playing at a semi-amateur level. Of course, 16 points after 15 matches are not a reason for pride, and they concluded 2023 with a home defeat, 1-3 against Braga. Nevertheless, this allows them to stay clear of the relegation zone, and there are no other serious challenges for now.
The clubs constantly played at different levels and did not cross paths in cup competitions. So, they will play against each other for the first time in an official match, although Casa Pia won 1-0 in a friendly match in the summer.
